# Get started with Zapnito webhooks

> Use webhooks when you want Zapnito to notify your systems as things happen in your community. Subscribe a URL to your first event.

With webhooks, **Zapnito sends a request to your system**. Use them when you want to react as soon as something happens in your community, such as a new user registering or a piece of content being published.

## When to use webhooks

* You want to react to activity as it happens, without checking for changes.
* You want to keep another system up to date, such as a CRM or data warehouse.
* You want to start a workflow when an event occurs.

If you need to look up or change data on demand instead, use the [API](/getting-started/api).

## Subscribe to your first event

<Steps>
  <Step title="Choose an event">
    Pick an event from the [webhook events list](/webhooks/overview#events). This example uses `user_registered`.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create a subscription">
    Send a `POST` request with the URL you want Zapnito to notify. Replace `YOUR_API_TOKEN` with your token and `https://your-community.zapnito.com` with your community's domain.

    ```bash title="Create a subscription" theme={null}
    curl -X POST https://your-community.zapnito.com/api/v1/rest_hooks/user_registered/subscriptions \
      -H "Authorization: Token token=YOUR_API_TOKEN" \
      -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
      -d '{"url": "https://example.com/webhooks/user-registered"}'
    ```

    A successful request returns `201 Created` with the subscription `id`. Keep it so you can delete the subscription later.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Receive the payload">
    Each time the event happens, Zapnito sends a JSON payload to your URL. See [User registered](/webhooks/user-registered) for an example payload.
  </Step>
</Steps>
